Democracy is a form of government by the people and for the people. Elected representatives are chosen by the citizens of an area in order to represent them in government functions. The power that the people has does end, however, at the election process. There is no lack of corruption in democratic systems, but that is not to say that it is all bad. There is most definitely a purpose for this type of governing, along with flaws.

Advantages of Democracy

1. Peaceful Government Modifications
Democracy offers modifications in the government while avoiding hostility. Countries that adapt to democracy can reassign authority from one party to another party through the mode of elections.

2. Averts Monopoly
Democracy averts monopoly by replacing the reigning party. The reigning party needs to ensure that its functions properly for the masses to re-elect them. If they are not re-elected by the people, they will be replaced by another party chosen by the masses though election.

3. Gratitude
Democracy stipulates the feeling of responsibility towards the masses. The elected party owes their accomplishments in the elections to the masses. The reigning party’s thankfulness to the masses can be their inspiration to act and to function well for the equality of the common man that put them as leader of the nation.

4. Social Responsibility
The masses can achieve a sense of contribution in the procedure for selecting the party that will rule the nation. The common man has the opportunity to speak out their voices and vies through electoral voting. This gives the masses the feeling of belongingness toward the society, and the well being of the entire nation.

Disadvantages of Democracy

1. Rule of the Incompetent
Because the power for choosing the nation’s legislature and prevailing authorities is at the hands of the common man, the rule of incompetent is not avoidable. The masses can make the wrong choice in choosing the nation’s governing party as they are not acquainted with the political matters and circumstances in their nation.

2. More Emphasis on Quantity than on Quality
Anti democratic groups believe the democracy is based upon quantity and not quality. Corrupt and inefficient person get elected. Incompetent persons neither have vision, nor character and intelligence to lead the nation to its destination.

3. Hordes Influence
Nations that adapt democracy provides horde the opportunity to manipulate citizens. People may be forced to support or vote a party due to the pressure of the bulk. Influenced and constrained by the ideas of the people around, an individual may not put his/her accurate judgment into action.

4. Low Moral Standard
To lead the nation, an individual needs to win the election. Both individuals and parties participating in an election employ under-hand practices in order to get elected. Other individuals practice unethical ways just to get elected. Some even practice character assassination.

The advantages and disadvantages of democracy are there to stay, and it depends on the masses how to put their correct judgment into action. The most important part is that democracy averts radicalism and encourages synchronization and teamwork.
