E Cigarette Pros and Cons List

With technology growing by leaps and bounds, everything is becoming electronic, even cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco and they produce no smoke, making them a popular choice for many smokers looking for an alternative to their cigarettes. Before you make the change, here are some pros and cons of e-cigarettes to help you make an informed decision.

List of Pros of E-Cigarettes

1. Healthier Then Tobacco Cigarettes
There are many different e-cigarettes available, but they mostly all have four ingredients in common. Those are propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine and food-grade flavors. Propylene glycol is FDA-approved for use as an additive in military rations, and vegetable glycerin is sweetener. Much better than the carbon monoxide, tar, ammonia, cyanide and other toxins found in tobacco smoke.

2. No Second Hand Smoke
Smokers may find it inconvenient to be forced outside for their nicotine, particularly in bad weather. But non-smokers do have a point when it comes to second hand smoke. It’s unhealthy, it smells bad and it hangs around forever. Vapor from e-cigarettes has a very mild scent that fades away within seconds.

3. Less Restrictions on Use
Because of the lack of second hand smoke and odors, e-cigarettes are allowed many places that tobacco cigarettes are not. In your hotel room, for instance, there is no way for anyone to either know whether you’ve used an e-cigarette in there or not-no ashes, no butts, and no smell left behind to linger. Bars, restaurants and even some work-places allow the use of e-cigarettes, though it’s always best to check before using your e-cigarette in public.

List of Cons of E-Cigarettes

1. Health Risks
Even though e-cigarettes are healthier than tobacco cigarettes, they do come with some health risks of their own. Some people have a reaction to the propylene glycol in almost all e-cigarettes. Buying e-liquids that do not contain any propylene glycol will counter this, but they are still a bit hard to find in some places. Propylene glycol also has a tendency to store and trap water, making some users dehydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of water to prevent this.

2. Risk of Battery Explosions
An e-cigarette, like any battery-powered device, comes with this inherent risk. There is always a chance that the battery might explode. It is hard to find information on this issue from reliable sources, but there is at least one validated story of a Florida man sustaining severe damage to his mouth, tongue, and teeth when his e-cigarette battery exploded. There is only a slim chance of this happening, but when it does occur it is devastating.

3. Lack Real Taste
E-cigarettes come in a variety of flavors and some of them taste fantastic. But what they won’t taste like, regardless of what any marketing campaign tells you, is real tobacco cigarettes. If you switch to e-cigarettes hoping that you won’t even be able to tell the difference, you will be disappointed. Even e-liquids that taste very close to real tobacco lack the smoke that is the real source of the flavor.
